President's Message:  Joe Nycum, Council President 2014-2015

Signs of Spring have finally arrived with the emergence of fragrant flowers, green grass, and buds giving way to new leaves on trees that will provide shade on soon to come warm Summer days.

It is at this time of the year that we begin planning for graduation ceremonies and find opportunities for earning CPE and professional development by attending a Chapter Spring Conference like the IMA Michigan Council & Michiana Student Conference, the Detroit Chapter's Management Accounting Conference, the Lake Superior State University Student Chapter of the IMA's Superior Accounting Conference on May 22, 2015, attending the IMA's 96th Annual Conference & Expo June 20-24 in Los Angeles, CA or one of the program year end celebrations like the 6th Annual IIA, ISACA, and IMA Detroit Chapter Dinner Cruise on May 29, 2015.

These Conferences, Meetings, and Events are only made possible with support from the IMA Global Office and the commitment of dedicated IMA Volunteers from our Council and Chapters who plan and host these educational and networking opportunities. At the start of my term as President of the IMA Michigan Council 2014-2015 program year, I mentioned that the most important message I hoped to resonate is the value of association and active participation in the very organizations that support us professionally and make a difference in our world.

Through the leadership and dedication of the IMA Michigan Council Board Members the Council was able to offer the 13th Annual Fall Conference to more than 200 Professional and Student Participants; Promote Chapter Meetings, Conferences and Charitable Fund Raising Events; Award Scholarships to deserving students and provide assistance with travel and conference fee costs to students who attended the 95th IMA Student Leadership Conference; Promote and Present information about the IMA and the CMA designation to College Students; Provide Website Maintenance & Support for the Council and Chapter Websites; Establish a new Council Leadership Award; and to serve in Leadership Roles on the IMA Global Board.

On behalf of the IMA Michigan Council Board, I want to say “Thanks” to all of our members who serve on the Boards of IMA Global, the IMA Michigan Council and its Chapters, along with those who offer to be guest speakers at IMA conferences and meetings, and who regularly attend those conferences and meetings.  It is the generous sharing of time, talent and resources by IMA members that sustain, grow and enhance the services of the IMA year after year.

In the February 2015 issue of Strategic Finance, IMA Chair, Joseph A. Vincent, CMA published an article titled "Building a Strong Board". He stated that "Governance is at the heart of any organization and the process of selecting members to sit on our Board is among the most critical functions of our association." Even though Mr. Vincent was speaking about the IMA Global Board, the same holds true for our Council and Chapter volunteer boards.

The IMA Michigan Council Board has selected, Brenda Engel as President of the IMA Michigan Council for the 2015-2016 program year. Brenda is a college professor, has a history of serving the IMA in many leadership roles, and will bring new energy and vision to the Council in the coming year. Please join me in congratulating Brenda as she begins serving as President July 1, 2015.

I encourage you to consider serving on the Board or an Advisory Committee of your local IMA Chapter and/or Council, if you aren't doing so already. Such volunteer service is an excellent way to grow professionally and help insure that the IMA continues to offer and provide the services needed for advancing the accounting and finance profession for years to come.

Leading Global Teams Virtually
