A Message from President, Dana Collins

Welcome to the Michigan Council of the Institute of Management Accountants.  You will see elsewhere in this website that the Michigan Council consists of 8 chapters of the IMA in Michigan and Northern Indiana and the Council provides support to these chapters through leadership training and educational speakers and topics.

I want to congratulate the Michiana Chapter on its 75th Anniversary and the special recognition program it held on June 21st to celebrate this achievement. Brian McGuire, Chair of the IMA, attended this special program; and I want to recognize the Chapter for all its success in providing exceptional opportunities and benefits to its members for this long history.

A Message from Outgoing President, Chuck Phillips

At the beginning of my term as Council President, I wanted to build on the foundation from our past Council Presidents.  I believe we did just that.

First, there was our 9th Annual Fall Conference.  We increased attendance from the prior year and attendees enjoyed the slate of speakers.  I am looking forward to our 10th Annual Fall Conference on Monday, October 24th, so reserve that date on your calendars.  I will see you there.

We had students from three different universities that attended the Student Leadership Conference in California last November.  They had a wonderful time and I am glad that the Michigan Council assisted with their expenses.  I also want to thank the Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Ann Arbor Chapters for assisting with the student's travel expenses as well.  This year's Student Leadership Conference will be in Cincinnati.  I hope that we can once again help students with their expenses to this year's conference, so that more universities are represented.

Plan to Attend the 10th Annual Fall Conference

The 2011 Fall Conference is scheduled for Monday, October 24th and will be held at Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State University. The conference is a great opportunity to earn CPE, be exposed to information that is important to our profession, and have an opportunity to meet and network with other Accounting Professionals.

As planning for topics and speakers progresses, watch our Fall Conference page for developments. If you have an idea for a topic, or know of an excellent speaker you'd recommend, please email Conference Chair, Chuck Phillips at cphillips@detroitlions.com .

Take a Look at the New Useful Links Page

Chris Mishler, our previous Michigan Council President, envisioned having a page on our web-site that would provide our members with links to websites of Professional Organizations, Financial Tools, Business Resources and more.  The Useful Links page is now a new page on the Michigan Council's website.  Please share your comments on the new page and let us know if you have suggestions about other websites that other IMA members might find useful by writing to webmaster@imamichigan.org.  We hope that you find the links on the new page very useful.

Detroit Metro Chapter News

The Detroit Chapter took 8th place in the National Chapter Competition!  Tom Miele stated that CPE for the day and a half seminar and student participation in all of the chapter's events helped raise the Detroit Chapter's standing in the Stevenson Division.  Tom praised Doug Hicks (Spring Conference Coordinator) and Maef Woods (WSU Professor) for their outstanding accomplishments and support in those areas.

The chapter's added focus on colleges the past few years is starting to pay some dividends in certification and chapter service points.  The Detroit Chapter participates in career fairs and also hosts an Accounting Certification Night every year to expose students to the CMA and other accounting credentials like the CFM, CMA, CFE, CFA, and CPA.
