President's Message:  Brenda Engel, Council President 2015-2016

After a busy summer of meeting planning and board training, our chapters are ready to begin their technical meeting schedules. We are a group of strong chapters, involved in our communities and providing excellent programs. The Michigan Council is set to offer its 14th Annual Fall Conference on October 19, 2015 at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing, Michigan.  Once again the Council will provide 8 hours of outstanding educational opportunities in the areas of accounting, auditing, economics, ethics, finance, professional development, talent acquisition and more for its Chapters’ members and the business leaders in our region. Each chapter is receiving a complementary registration to distribute as you choose. I hope each chapter has several members in attendance at the Conference. I look forward to seeing you there.

As I have mentioned before, one of my pet projects is student activities, as they are the future of our organization and our profession! The Aug-2015 issue of SF included an article "Nurturing Student Leaders While They Have Fun" which describes the benefits of the Student Leadership Conference coming up in November. Encourage a student to attend and/or why not help sponsor one to attend? We all have student chapters near our chapters in the Michigan Council. I also want to remind you the Michiana Chapter has hosted a Student Conference in our area for the last 5 years. This conference opportunity, slated for Friday, March 18, 2016 at Trine University in Mishawaka, IN,  may be more in line with our students' budgets in our Council. It's free! Sponsor a student by donating to cover the costs of this conference. Please contact me for further information.

As accounting and finance professionals we have seen many changes in our daily activities and the organizations in which we work. One area in which we have become increasing involved is innovation. As Patrick J. Stroh, CMA states in his article titled “Advancing Innovation” in the latest issue of Strategic Finance The pendulum has swung, and 70% of senior finance and accounting professionals now support innovation in some fashion vs. only 40% 10 years ago. Looking into the near future (the next one to three years), it’s likely that only less than one in five of you won’t be involved in innovation. And the percentage of those who will be “somewhat” or “often” involved will probably rise to greater than 70%, with the “often” involved group expected to leap to 38% from a mere 11% just 10 years ago.

We are not just the measurers of innovation anymore. We are facilitators, champions of innovation and change. I encourage you to attend your Chapter’s technical meetings and the Michigan Fall Conference to help you learn and reinforce the skills you need to be effective in your position.  As I said in my first message to you, all of us on the IMA Michigan Council Board are intensely dedicated to assisting individual Members and Chapters achieve their goals. If you need any help in coordinating meetings, training board members, finding a speaker for a meeting or any other ways the Council can help, please contact your Regional Director or me at bbengel1@comcast.net. I would be happy to talk to you.

Sincerely,

Brenda Engel, MBA

President of the IMA Michigan Council 2015-2016

Leading with Style

By Susan P. Edwards, CMA, CPA, CLCP, CGMA

"Leadership is inspiring or influencing others to do what you ask of them. Everyone influences someone. Sociologists tell us that even the most introverted individuals will influence 10,000 people in their lifetime. Think about that for a minute. The question isn't whether we will influence others but how we will influence others. What action do you want to inspire?" Overhauling Ethics Education

By Kelly Richmond Pope, CPA

"Engaging students digitally will give them a better learning experience and will help them remember lessons throughout their careers." "In order to be effective, ethics will need to be fully integrated into business curricula rather than offered as simply a stand-alone special assignment or as part of a discussion day." says Danny Lanier, Jr., an assistant professor of accounting at Elon University in Elon, N.C.
